First-of-the-Year Smorgasbord (and a freebie!)
Happy New Year! Today’s post is what I call a smorgasbord, a friendly hello to talk about a variety of things, something I do here at Writing in the Buff every so often. So let’s chat!
Somewhere it was said that we should take care how we spend our time on January 1st of the New Year because that is indicative of how we will spend the remainder of the year. Apparently, I will spend 2018 power-watching “The Ranch,” noshing chips, and falling asleep on the couch.
In my defense, the hubster and I planned to spend the afternoon at the beach, but the weather didn’t cooperate. It was gray and chilly, raining off and on, so we made hot cocoa and put our feet up. It’s been a long time since we each embraced our inner slug, and it felt good to do nothing all day.
That was Monday. Tuesday I spent half the morning on the phone working out an appointment time for my annual boob squish, aka mammogram. Insurance covers it 100%, but because my doctor sent the order to a facility out-of-network, I had to jump through a few hoops to get it worked out. Both the doctor’s office and my insurance company representatives were pleasant and easy to work with, but it still took a ridiculous amount of time. This rep needed an authorization number, that rep needed a reference number, both needed everything but the blood of my firstborn, and blah, blah, blah—all so I can bring my girls to be flattened like a pair of mosquitos at a flyswatter convention. (Worst simile of the year right there, but you know, if you start out at the bottom it can only go up from there.
After that, I spent way more time than intended cleaning up the “download” file on my laptop. You wouldn’t believe the junk I deleted or transferred to other files. One of my resolutions for 2018 is to keep that “download” folder clean of debris. We’ll see how that goes. It’s the equivalent of a junk drawer, so . . . yeah. I found stuff I couldn’t even remember downloading and a surprising number of duplicated items. There were also old photos of yours truly—profile pic possibilities—that were never foisted upon the public (you’re welcome) and which reminded me yet again why I’m a writer and not a model. Eyes half opened, a grimace instead of a smile. hair sticking up at odd angles—you get the picture. Or rather, you didn’t get the picture. Ha.
Next in line was to start this post, which I did, and now it’s Wednesday morning and I’m putting the finishing touches on today’s smorgasbord. Luna, my cat, has decided her assistance is required. She is climbing all over me, my desk, my Surface Pro, and purring up a storm which you know I love. When she gets flirty like this the base of her tail poofs out, she drools, shakes her head, and sends cat spit flying. The first few times she did it I was completely grossed out, but during the clean-up process I discovered that this gooey splattering inexplicably makes a fine glass cleaner for my computer screen if I catch it before it dries. If I could bottle that stuff I’d make a fortune. I could call it Pretty Kitty Cat Cleaner and list the ingredients by a scientific breakdown of kitty spittle. No one would ever know.
She’s finally settled on my lap. Pretty kitty, indeed.
Pam once again did an amazing job bringing the Fireflies characters to life.
