First-of-the-Year Smorgasbord (and a freebie!)

Happy New Year! Today’s post is what I call a smorgasbord, a friendly hello to talk about a variety of things, something I do here at Writing in the Buff every so often. So let’s chat!

Somewhere it was said that we should take care how we spend our time on January 1st of the New Year because that is indicative of how we will spend the remainder of the year. Apparently, I will spend 2018 power-watching “The Ranch,” noshing chips, and falling asleep on the couch.

In my defense, the hubster and I planned to spend the afternoon at the beach, but the weather didn’t cooperate. It was gray and chilly, raining off and on, so we made hot cocoa and put our feet up. It’s been a long time since we each embraced our inner slug, and it felt good to do nothing all day.

That was Monday. Tuesday I spent half the morning on the phone working out an appointment time for my annual boob squish, aka mammogram. Insurance covers it 100%, but because my doctor sent the order to a facility out-of-network, I had to jump through a few hoops to get it worked out. Both the doctor’s office and my insurance company representatives were pleasant and easy to work with, but it still took a ridiculous amount of time. This rep needed an authorization number, that rep needed a reference number, both needed everything but the blood of my firstborn, and blah, blah, blah—all so I can bring my girls to be flattened like a pair of mosquitos at a flyswatter convention. (Worst simile of the year right there, but you know, if you start out at the bottom it can only go up from there.

After that, I spent way more time than intended cleaning up the “download” file on my laptop. You wouldn’t believe the junk I deleted or transferred to other files. One of my resolutions for 2018 is to keep that “download” folder clean of debris. We’ll see how that goes. It’s the equivalent of a junk drawer, so . . . yeah. I found stuff I couldn’t even remember downloading and a surprising number of duplicated items. There were also old photos of yours truly—profile pic possibilities—that were never foisted upon the public (you’re welcome) and which reminded me yet again why I’m a writer and not a model. Eyes half opened, a grimace instead of a smile. hair sticking up at odd angles—you get the picture. Or rather, you didn’t get the picture. Ha.

Next in line was to start this post, which I did, and now it’s Wednesday morning and I’m putting the finishing touches on today’s smorgasbord. Luna, my cat, has decided her assistance is required. She is climbing all over me, my desk, my Surface Pro, and purring up a storm which you know I love. When she gets flirty like this the base of her tail poofs out, she drools, shakes her head, and sends cat spit flying. The first few times she did it I was completely grossed out, but during the clean-up process I discovered that this gooey splattering inexplicably makes a fine glass cleaner for my computer screen if I catch it before it dries. If I could bottle that stuff I’d make a fortune. I could call it Pretty Kitty Cat Cleaner and list the ingredients by a scientific breakdown of kitty spittle. No one would ever know.

She’s finally settled on my lap. Pretty kitty, indeed.

Last, but not least, I have some good news to share. LOVE TO BELIEVE is now available in audiobook format! Click HERE to listen to a sample of Pam Dougherty‘s fantastic narration:

Pam once again did an amazing job bringing the Fireflies characters to life. If you’re interested in listening and reviewing, please let me know in a comment here or through email or my website contact form, and I’ll give you a promotional code you can use to listen to the book for FREE in exchange for an honest review.

LOVE TO WIN is in the works and will be available as an audiobook soon.

Please leave a comment and share what you did on New Year’s Day—is it something you hope to be doing all year? Inquiring minds want to know!

I sincerely hope all of you enjoyed a wonderful New Year’s celebration and that 2018 holds great things in store for you and your loved ones.

See you next Wednesday!

Luna IS a pretty kitty. I’llbe sending $9.95 + shipping and handling for a bottle of that cleaner. Start bottling.

    And Happy New Year!

Isn’t it funny how at the beginning of the year we all want to declutter? I’ve had the same thing on my mind, but haven’t started to tackle it yet.

Your narrator has a beautiful voice. I enjoyed listening to her.

I’ll let her know, Pat. I love her narration, too. She’s very talented.

Best wishes to you and yours for 2018. I can’t recommend my first day of the year, to be honest. I woke up, felt lousy, made coffee, ate breakfast and then I went back to bed again. I had no intention of falling asleep again, but I slept for another two hours and felt miserable after that too. I have a declutter phase myself, I tackled my email. Outlook didn’t do as promised (I had rules and maps the email should go to, but outlook didn’t want to play that game) So I downloaded another email software in the hope this one does what it supposed to be doing. Reading about Luna, makes me long to have a kitty again, but hubs isn’t ready yet.

So sorry you began the year feeling under the weather, Riet. Hope you recovered quickly.

Luna is a sweet cat. I don’t blame you for wanting a cat of your own. Perhaps your husband can be persuaded, and you’ll soon have a kitty sitting on your lap while you read. 🙂

If only I could declutter my desk. It was that way when I taught, also. But oh when the mood strikes, everybody watch out!

I love your term, Inner Slug. I must have a big one! But these days are cold and with a wind-chill of -10 I plan to hibernate for just a little longer. Fun post.

Oh, I remember those wind chill temps from when I lived in New England. It’s about 52 here now and I don’t want it to get any colder. Florida has spoiled me!

We slept in because we were up until 4:30 a.m. sharing time with friends doing karaoke and generally having fun on New Year’s Eve. Sometimes chillin’ is a good thing. Happy New Year Lisa!!

You gave the reminder I’d rather not have but sorely need about that downloads file! A fun post!

Thanks, Shari. And good luck with your own downloads file. I’m glad I took care of mine, but it was a real chore.

My inner slug got a huge workout this year from 12/24/17-1/2/18. I finally gave in and went to the doctor and she pronounced me no longer contagious. From my description of the symptoms I had she’s fairly confident that I had the flu – in spite of getting a flu shot like I have had every year for the last 20 years or so.

I’m ready for this cold, crappy weather to be gone. We’re leaving on a cruise Saturday and it’s supposed to be cool for the duration but not as bad as it is here right now. 🙂

I’ll be sending you an email to request a code for Love to Believe.

Sorry you were sick, but glad you’re all better in time for your cruise! Have a wonderful time. 🙂

I sent the Audible code as requested. 🙂

Funny about the cat spit – my “Kitty” drools too and I thought she was just a weirdo and if she shakes her head… ugh. Never near my computer screen, so I had no idea that her spittle would be a good cleaner!

So I’m such a slug that I just crawled over here. To be fair, I’ve had a lot of football to watch. (Happy new year, Lovely Lisa! Still miss you!)
