Romance is good for your heart!

I’m So Blue (or Color Me Happy)

Writing in the Buff is now true blue! One of the reasons I chose this theme when I switched from Blogger to WordPress is because I could switch colors every four months with the click of a button.  I’ll be blue until April, and then I’ll be in the pink until August and then back to the autumn colors that I just left behind. Not the most scientific reason to choose a blog theme, but hey, pretty colors make me happy. And the flowers in the header are all romance-y and stuff. I know, I know. I’m such a girl.

The ridiculous giddiness that overtook me by the simple color scheme highlighted the reality that while I wouldn’t turn down a diamond necklace if presented with one (I do love the shiny stuff), the truth is I don’t need it to be happy. A lot of things bring me a sense of contentment, things that aren’t grand or expensive or even, yes, that’s right, shiny. Shiny catches my attention, but other stuff keeps my heart beating. (WARNING! OOEY-GOOEY ALERT! PROCEED AT YOUR OWN CAUTION!)

What stuff, you may ask? Okay, so you didn’t ask, but I’ll tell you anyway. Stuff like holding hands with my husband and hearing his voice anytime at all (we’re coming up on 34 years of marriage and the guy still sends me), hugs and smoochies from my kids, whenever I’m required to answer to the name “Mom,” “Mommy,” or “Mama,” random calls from friends just to say hey, the greeting my dogs provide whether I’m coming back from a trip to Florida or just the mailbox. My cats make me happy just by being cats (if you are owned by a cat you understand this statement). The sunrise makes me happy every day, as does my beloved morning coffee (Texas Pecan and Swiss Almond Mocha being my two faves) made from beans ground fresh (8 seconds creates the perfect grind) and brewed for exactly 4.5 minutes in the French press which I inherited from Papa. My laptop makes me happy, and every second spent writing is bliss, even when I’m pulling my hair out and banging my head on the desk. Sundresses in the summer, sweaters and sweatshirts in the winter, and the beach, always. Crabtree & Evelyn Spring Rain body lotion because I love the scent and it reminds me of my Mama, sun-drops on the ocean because they remind me of my Daddy, unexpected contest wins, and anything Christmas, all make me happy.

Oh, yeah. And the requisite wine and chocolate. See, I’m so easy, who needs diamonds? A Bedazzler would keep me smiling and busy for weeks.

What makes you happy? What are the brush strokes of your daily life that keep you on track and feeling good? Are you easy, like me, or are you a little more high maintenance? Do you need more than the sound of someone’s voice to ramp up your pulse? I’m not asking what you’re thankful for, Buttercup. What I want to know is: What keeps your heart beating?

Thanks for visiting Writing in the Buff. I appreciate you!

See you next week for more of the naked truth.
