Paranormal Experiences: What do you believe?

Do you believe in the mystical, the paranormal? Numerology, astrology, spirit guides, ghosts? Guardian angels? Do you believe in psychics and mediums? Life after death? Do you believe there is the possibility for communication beyond the grave?

While working on my latest novel in which the heroine is a phony reality TV medium and the hero is a ghost, I’ve done a lot of reading on these topics. I’ve talked to people who once were skeptics but changed their minds after an otherworldly experience. And I’ve talked to those who roll their eyes and insist it’s all a lot of hooey.

Which are you? Believer or skeptic?

Have you or someone close to you ever had a paranormal experience? Will you share it in the comments?

Yep, this is a short post this week, but I have these burning questions and would like to read your answers and experiences. I’m curious to know: What do you believe?

Thanks for visiting. See you next week!

I pretty much believe in all the above. I come from a fairly long line of women and a few men who had ‘second sight’ and passed it down the line. I had visits from my grandfather and my brother after they had passed. They just wanted me to know they were still around and okay.

That’s fascinating, Peg! Thanks for sharing, and please feel free to leave a more detailed comment about your experiences.

Lisa – just how long and detailed do you want? I hesitate to write too much where anyone can read it. My family have been ridiculed over many years and my generation was firmly told to keep our mouths shut about the things that have happened. I’d be happy to share with you but would prefer my stories be private.

I believe anything is possible. I’ve had a couple of experiences, but not related to actually seeing or communicating with a spirit. More along the lines of strange things happening. And by the way, your WIP sounds fascinating!

If you don’t mind sharing, Pat, I’d love to hear about those experiences. If they are too detailed for you to comment here, perhaps they would make a good topic for one of your lovely blog posts. 🙂

One experience is in a CS for the Soul book. In a nutshell, I went to visit my mom’s grave for the first time, about a year after her death, but couldn’t find the tombstone. I searched and searched, but…nothing. Finally spoke out loud in frustration, “Mom, where are you?” Not long after, a couple of doves flew in and landed right on her tombstone. I kid you not!

What a cool experience, Pat. As “signs from above” go, you can’t do much better than a pair of doves! I’m sure you got goosebumps, but in a good way. 🙂

I believe there are a great many things we don’t understand or have forgotten how to understand the impossible and even miracles.

Love the way you put that, Tierney, “…forgotten to understand…” There’s a world of meaning right there.

I definitely believe in life after death, and that ghosts and spirits are real. But the thought of trying to communicate with the dead or with spirits is outside my realm of comfort. That said, your novel sounds interesting. 🙂 I can read things like that as long as they stay light hearted and aren’t too scary! Where does your book fall on that spectrum?

My book is not scary from the paranormal standpoint. The hero is a ghost, so I want readers in love with him, not afraid of him. But there are mobsters and other bad guys! 🙂 If you’ve read my other books, then you’re familiar with my “voice.” This is written in the same way with the goal being that the characters will be people readers love spending time with.

Because I believe in ghosts and spirits as you do—and like you, I’ve never had any personal encounters (I’d probably freak out! lol)—I’m interested in learning about it from people I know and trust rather than simply reading random stories. The more I learn, the better my series will be.

Oh yes, I believe in the unexplainable. I witnessed my best friend’s spirit leave her body and float to the ceiling. I thought it might have been lights , but there was a brick wall outside her hospital room when I opened the curtains. Also one evening we were sitting in the kitchen with family. I glanced into the hall at movement, and saw an apparition rush by, with hunch back. I jumped up and shouted, “Who was that? Did you see it?” No one was there, and nobody else saw it. next day, my dad who walked hunched over from emphazema passed away. I believe it was a visit.

Wow, Linda. Those are amazing experiences. I’ve not had anything like that happen—probably because in the past the thought of such things scared me—but I’d certainly welcome the experience now. Thanks for sharing.

I missed this post – probably getting ready for that cruise we just got back from. I haven’t had any ghostly experiences but after my dad passed away, while on vacation overseas, I dreamed about him for a long time – which I never had before. They were happy dreams and made me feel close to him even though he was gone.

Your WIP is going to be great. 😉

After my mom died, I had many dreams of her for several months after. Vivid dreams, and they were different than other dreams I’ve had. The last dream of her like that ended with the two of us in a cavernous room, hugging and crying. A set of double doors opened and we both knew she had to go through them. She did. And though I’ve dreamed of her since that time, none have ever been like those dreams just after her death. When I dream of her now, they’re just dreams. They don’t present or feel the way those did.
