That Little Something Extra ;)

Every Monday afternoon in my neighborhood there is a pool party. There are never cancellations due to snow or ice, and tee shirts, shorts, and flip-flops are always appropriate attire. Folks bring their beverage of choice, and everyone brings a snack to share. Snacks might be anything from a bowl of potato chips to prosciutto/mozzarella roll-ups. Sometimes there are homemade sweets or a crock pot of meatballs. Most people don’t plan a dinner for Monday night because there is so much food at the pool. And yes, these people are the reason I re-joined Weight Watchers. Good times. 🙂

Interestingly, most show up to the pool party wearing no bathing suit.

Er . .  wait. That might require clarification.

Most folks are there for the food and conversation, not to swim, so they’ve traded their bathing suits for those aforementioned tee shirts, shorts, and flip-flops. I assure you that everyone is fully clothed. If there has ever been an instance where someone showed up sans cover-up, I’ve not heard about it nor been witness to it. It’d sure make for interesting conversation around the neighborhood, though.

This past Monday we came upon the topic of old songs. One that came up was Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built for Two). You remember it, I’m sure:

Daisy, Daisy give me your answer, do.
I’m half crazy all for the love of you.
It won’t be a stylish marriage. I can’t afford a carriage.
But you’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.

We sang it and laughed, and then recalled the lesser known response, not part of the original lyrics, but written for chuckles:

Davey, Davey here is your answer true.
I’m not crazy all for the love of you.
If you can’t afford a carriage, you can’t afford a marriage.
And I’ll be damned if I’ll be crammed on a bicycle built for two.

That got me thinking about other songs that became popular and later had lyrics added. The one that stands out is Garth Brooks’s Friends in Low Places. If you’ve never heard the much beloved extra verse, here it is:

And then there are parody songs. If you’re friends with me on Facebook, you may have seen this a few weeks ago (if we aren’t friends on Facebook, why not? Please friend me!). It is touted as “The Best Workout Song,” and I have to agree. I challenge you to watch it and not laugh.

Do you have a favorite “extra verse” or song parody to share? Please comment!

Thanks for visiting Writing in the Buff. Hope you had fun! See you next week.

This was like a mental vacation from my crazy day. LOL First of all, I’m currently in an ice situation (Missouri) so to hear about pool parties and songs is just what I needed. 🙂

Stay warm, Teri! I have a lot of writing pals in MO, and I’ve been worried about all of them with the weather being so nasty up there. Now I’ll add you to the list!

Your weather is so lovely. Our temps plummeted from almost 70 (practically unheard of in February for Missouri) to freezing. Gotta love variety, I guess.

We’re actually unseasonably warm, Pat. Not sure we’ll be happy about that come August!

Well, I’m beginning to see why you just might be having a wee problem getting motivated to work down there, Lisa. 🙂

So we used to sing this (to the tune of Shine, Little Glow Worm)

    Grow little boobies, bigger, bigger
    Grow little boobies, bigger, bigger,
I want to look like Bridgette Bardo-o-o-o-o-ot
    So grow little boobies, grow!

Hahahaha! *wipes eyes* Hehehe . . . I’ve not heard that one, Cath, but it’s going to be stuck in my brain all day. Too funny!

Oh my goodness! Between your post and Cathy’s reply, I am so glad I stopped by this afternoon. I needed a little pick-me-up and this worked great. I’m so glad you’ve settled in to your new home. Weekly pool parties sound pretty great right about now. (Below zero and freezing winds here in Minnesota!)

I can’t wrap my head around Minnesota, Deb. That’s some serious cold up there!

Weekly pool parties? That’s cool. We have about one a month in the summer. It’s hard to find people to organize things and then clean up afterwards.

I’m off to Daytona Beach for the Coastal Magic book convention this weekend. There will be 50 featured authors. I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new people. 🙂

Have fun at your convention! I know you’ll have fun and make some friends, as you’re good at both of those things. 🙂
