That gorgeous couple in the above photo (enlarge by clicking on it) were duly wed on Siesta Key Beach and are honeymooning in the Caribbean. Yes, my son is now a husband and thanks to his excellent taste in women I’ve inherited a new daughter who is as smart and sweet as she is beautiful. I’m one happy mama.

Here are a couple more photos:

So, I know you’re wondering: What about the dress?

Well, we all know it was never really about the dress. It was about Joey and Ashley tying the knot and me wanting everything, right down to my attire, to be worthy of their special day. Here’s a pic of me in the elusive dress standing with my two besties, Linda and Carrie. I’ve been blessed to call these ladies friends for more than 20 years, and I was thrilled to have them share the day with me. I’m the one in the middle. Please note the beachy, flowy dress. This was my first official act as a mother-in-law and I think I got it right, but I’ll let you be the judge. Did I mention that it’s beachy and flowy?

My quest for the dress got me thinking about fine fabrics and threads, and the notion that while stores are full of clothes made of countless materials presented in an array of designs and sizes, it isn’t easy to find a perfect fit. Finding a life mate is that way, too. There’s plenty to choose from, but getting a tailored fit takes some effort. And once you find the right one, there are alterations to be made, in the way of compromise and consideration.

Many years ago I wrote a song for my sister’s wedding, and in the intervening years have sung it for a friend’s wedding, and the words sans music have been read at other weddings, as well. Here it is:

Love’s Tapestry

by Lisa Ricard Claro

Oh, Lord, bless this day, bless this hour, bless these hearts that come to you.

Oh, Lord, bless their lives, bless their dreams, this they humbly ask of you.

For love—love knows no pride, love doesn’t hide, love always shows its face.

Love’s tapestry of silken strands will bend and sway, but never break,

beneath a gentle hand.

Lord, let love’s tapestry that they shall weave show strength and happiness.

And in years to come, when they reflect upon what they’ve made,

dear Lord, touch those silken strands and bless them yet again.

For love—love knows no pride, love doesn’t hide, love always shows its face.

Love’s tapestry of silken strands will bend and sway, but never break,

beneath a gentle hand.

Oh, Lord, bless this day, bless this hour, bless these hearts that come to you,

With love.

A note for my dear Joey and Ashley: I wish you a lifetime of love woven with fine threads—threads that are flexible enough to create the colorful and textured tapestry you have already begun to weave, and strong enough to endure the winds of any storm. I love you both more than you will ever know.

See you next week for more of the naked truth. Enjoy your Wednesday!

[…] I dragged you with me on my quest for a mother-of-the-groom dress (post links are here, here, and here if you missed them back then). It was a journey of epic proportions, a seemingly impossible task […]
