What Inspires You? I’ve Got Hairy Bookends!

Posted on Feb 9, 2011 by Lisa Ricard Claro   21 Comments | Posted in dogs · dragons · penny · rigby · woodspirit

Not long ago I posted about my writing muses, Wood Spirit Walt and a trio of dragons named Edgar, Allan and Poe.  (Here’s the link to that post, if you’d like a look at Walt and his winged cohorts:  http://www.writinginthebuff.net/2010/11/wood-spirit-walt-and-dragons-edgar.html.)

Yesterday my two Lab (okay, Lab-ish) pups curled like breathing bookends on the daybed in my office, and I realized I omitted them in my previous post about muses. How could I forget Penny (black female) and Rigby (yellow male)? These two hairy kids keep me company every day. They mosey over for a belly rub right about the time my brain is deep-freezing on a plot point or my memory faltering on proper syntax. How do they always know the perfect time to offer encouragement?

These faithful pups wait with Zen-like patience for me to abandon the keyboard and scratch their ears or reward their adorable hairiness with rawhide treats.  They also bark to warn me of horrible threats to my safety, such as a leaf falling from a tree in a neighboring county or the miniature Chihuahua peeing on a bush three houses down.

Okay, so admittedly their danger assessment skills are lacking, but Rigby and Penny excel at other things. They imbue my world with an abundance of positive juju, and they love me with unwavering fervor whether I’m putting the finishing touches on a story or wading neck deep in the swamp of a mucky first draft.

And let’s face it. When it comes to inspiration, it’s hard to beat a wagging tail and wet nose.

Til next time —
Lisa

Awh I love your bed bookends. I had sofa bookends in the form of my cats, too. My cats have been a great inspiration for some of my writing. Your pups look so adorable. :O)

I have a black lab named Daisy. Labs are the best aren't they? Daisy does the same thing to me when I am at my computer. Oh, and I love Penny's li'l white toes! Too cute. And not to leave out Rigby…what a handsome boy!

I am trying to convince Nathanael to let me get a dog. It's time, I think. It's between a german shepherd or a lab, maybe a husky…I'm guessing you'd recommend the lab?! Yours are adorable. And congrats on 75 followers!! That's awesome. So excited to see what the numbers will be at the end of your contest!

I have a little paper monkey that I cut from a card. It hangs by its tail out of my tissue box on a shelf on the computer desk. It is my reminder to quit monkeying around and get going.

Speaking of contests, Lisa, Congratulations! You have won my "Count the Dog Biscuits in My Jar Contest!" Your guess of 200 was 'closest to the pin (a golfing term for the best chip of the match)' for the correct answer of 216. I had dumped the whole box in after doing the math, starting with counting how many were in one ounce.I like your book ends. Adi is my blogging buddy, she is always laying close to keep my thoughts calmed down.Lastly, I do hope you have a good vacuum cleaner. Our dogs and the cat leave a lot of hairs around. The furniture is 'off limits.'..

Hard to find bookends that are more distracting than the books….I believe you've done it.

Wet noses and wagging tails might lead to richer tales…Sometimes I drink a lot of water while I'm writing, so I have to also get up frequently and pee. But warm puppies are much better…

Hi Madeleine – I have cats, too. We're a zoo at my house! LOL Cats provide a different vibe than dogs…not better or worse, just different. My daughter's kitten, Luna, likes to curl up behind the laptop where it is warm. She peeks out and bats at the screen images. :)Hi Polly – Yes, Labs rock! Great personalities and so loving. Ours are mixes. I bet your Daisy has at least 10-20 pounds on my furry kids!Hey Deb – Yes. I would recommend a Lab or a Golden Retriever. Both are wonderful family pets and terrific with kids. Let me know what you decide. Hi Pat – Yes, they are wonderful muses. You have your Indy and so I know you understand!Hey Linda – Your monkey sounds cute; whimsical, like my dragons. Don't know what I'd do without them. 🙂

Hey Jim – Woo-hoo! Great news! I can't believe I won. I really thought I might have guessed too high. Thanks so much! You're right about the shedding. That hair gets into everything!Hey Eric – You are only the second person ever to notice the Beatles connection. Abbey would be too obvious, don't you think? Maxwell might have worked, though. 🙂 Hi Claudia – You have numerous items to keep you inspired, and each so different from the other. I love the oil can. :)More snow? Oh my goodness. You must be completely tired of the white stuff by now, no matter how pretty it is. Stay warm!Hey Kathy – Alas, they care not a whit for their internet exposure. Belly rubs and Milk Bones, baby…that's what they yearn for! Hi Tammy – You're right! Sometimes I stop writing just to go love on them. They're just so darn sweet.Hey Sioux – LOL There's a story in there somewhere. . .

I love your puppies and the names of your dragons. I have lost all hope of ever writing anything again — maybe a muse is what I need. My cat sits on top of my laptop, when it's open, or pushes at it to get onto my lap. She's not exactly inspiring!

Hi Karen – Thanks for the shout out! And I'm thrilled I won your contest. I'm really looking forward to reading the book I was fortunate enough to win. I LOVE blog contests! :)Hi Ellie – You're right about that! They are a joy, even with all the shedding. LOLHey Becky – Your Tiger would want you to have another pooch to love; you have a lot of love to give, and somewhere out there is a deserving hairy kid who is about to get really lucky. :)Hi Anita – You'll write when you're ready. Perhaps read a book about writing, like Stephen King's "On Writing" or the amazing "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott. I promise you'll find inspiration in both of these. As to your laptop kitty, well…LOL…a cat is a force unto itself. Maybe write about that. 🙂
