It is already mid afternoon, and after missing a whole day of NaNo typing yesterday I am, at last, sitting at the keyboard.  I should be working on my novel, but like a kid with homework I must procrastinate first, and blogging is as effective a mechanism as any. So here I am, stalling. . .er, blogging.

Before the creative part of my brain fully engages, there are several pre-writing tasks to be accomplished, and noshing on Veggie Straws (pseudo potato chips shaped like french fries) has already been accomplished. After the successful munching of junk food comes the feng shui portion of the Writing Eccentricities program, where I make sure my writing muses are in their proper place.  So. . .hand carved by my daddy is Wood Spirit Walt who looks like an old Indian chief and hangs on the wall next to the window above my desk.  He whispers all manner of wise advice regarding grammar and character development–check.

The Three Writing Dragons, which I have never seen actually fly or spit fire, but I suspect that they zoom about at night while the rest of the house is sleeping. I cannot prove it, but it explains why my cats’ run laps when the lights are out. So. . .my Three Writing Dragons who sit on my printer next to my desk: Edgar, Allan and Poe, who remind me not to take myself too seriously–check.

The last thing required before I get down to business—lighting of the candle. It burns while I write and smells up the room (in a good way).  Walt, Edgar, Allan and Poe seem to like it, so candle burning is a go. And–check! Writing muses in place, candle all aglow, and I’m ready to NaNo.

Before signing off I want to remind you about my blog contest for which you may still sign up. Details are in a previous post…just scroll down.  Also, my blog friend, Karen, over at Write Now is hosting a contest, too.  Check it out!

And. . .I’m off to NaNo! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Lisa

So you procrastinate too, huh? I dance around projects all the time, checking email and other seemingly important stuff…Thanks for the mention about the giveaway! Appreciate you sharing the info. Wish you all the best with NaNoWriMo writing success! :)Happy weekend,Karen

My husband, when doing his dissertation, would cook when he should have been writing. It is a sure clue he has a report or project that needs attention when he begins making lasagna. Not a bad deal for me.

Keep up the NaNo writing. You will feel such a sense of accomplishment when the month is done. And I like the idea of candle-burning as part of our "routine." The olfactory component is not one I have considered. Thanks.

you are at the point I hoped to be wordwise a few days ago. I'm pretty sure I'll hit the halfway mark by halfway day. But I know how those distractions keep coming about and blogging is always a big one for me. Well, I guess it could be worse.Keep at it, girl!Lee Tossing It Out

You go, Lisa. Whatever it takes. I just polished off four miniature chocolate donuts. Now it's time to write.

Hi Lisa,I love this. Walt, Edgar, Allen and Poe are so cute. I love how Walt reminds you of your Dad. You have given me some great ideas to get into the creative writing mood. I think it is time to clean my desk and get it more writing friendly. My photos are more of a technical deal, not needing a set mood. Thanks! Have a great Sunday!Kathy

Hi Lisa, I light a candle too! And well, you've probably seen my little things that get me all settled into writing too. I love the wood carving Wood Spirit Walt and made by your dad! Wow, how lucky are you? And your dragons are a hoot. I probably need something to remind myself not to be so serious… and how fun that you named them Edgar, Allen and Poe. You are so clever! I know you're going to make it even with your procrastination! Yay!

Hi Karen – Yes, I do procrastinate. I'm fine once I get started…it's the getting started that is the problem!

Hi Sioux – Thanks for your continued encouragement. And you know what? I think the candle helps get me started. When the candle is lit, that means I have to get down to business. 🙂

Hi Kathy, Lynn and Tammy – I didn't realize how superstitious I am about my writing until I wrote this post. Wood spirits, dragons, candles…maybe I need to change genres to fantasy!

Hi Ellie – A ninja! Well, I rather hoped a WS bobblehead, but I'm sure a ninja works, too! Hope you're doing well with your NaNo!
